While everyone, this writer included, was losing their cool over Rooney’s genuinely clever goal celebration, Everton were quietly notching their first home win of 2015 in emphatic style by defeating a hapless 10 man Newcastle United 3-0 at Goodison Park.
It was a huge win for an Everton team who have been vastly underperforming this season. Everton are only six points from the relegation zone, and it’s a far cry from their table climbing accolades of previous seasons – but this performance from them was convincing. Fans should take pride in this result, and hope it’s enough to motivate the team to keep climbing away from the danger of relegation.
It was a brilliant weekend for some of the underdogs – and also for the entertained neutrals. We’re now heading into the final stretch of the season, and while the teams at the top may be fairly settled, let these results show that there’s still the world to play for at the bottom half of the table— and that on the right day, any team can take home any three points.
