Sorry Roberto but cool heads are the one thing you won’t get when Everton play Liverpool

Roberto MartinezIt is a weekend of derbies and all fans will have their opinion on which will be the hottest, but the one thing that both the red and blue halves of Mersyeside agree on is that their match wipes the floor with the rest.

The game of the season according to both Everton and Liverpool fans – and one that is a pressure cooker unlike no other.

Tempers fray, emotions are heightened and the fans provide a caldron of noise no matter who is home or away. There have been late goals, vital points dropped and lost and players seeing red. In fact, what would make headlines for weeks after some Premier League games is considered normal when Liverpool come to Goodison Park.

That fact is not lost on Toffees boss Roberto Martinez, who has called for ‘cool heads’ during the clash, which as per usual, is worth far more than three points.

This will be Steven Gerrard’s last trip to Goodison Park as Liverpool skipper, maybe even as a Liverpool player altogether unless he returns on loan during the MLS off season and there is nothing Everton fans would like more than to send Gerrard packing to America on the back of a final defeat against the club he dislikes as much as any other. The feeling is obviously mutual for the Goodison faithful – and they will make sure their voices are heard above their visiting neighbours.

Expect renditions of the infamous Gerrard chant. Expect passion. Expect goals. Expect a couple of dubious decisions. In fact probably the only thing that you shouldn’t expect is cool heads – sorry Roberto but that’s just not the way the derby works.

Everton fans. Will you manage to keep 11 men on the pitch come full time on Saturday evening? Let us know your thoughts below, become a guest blogger or tweet us @LaFootyettes.
