Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who is suffering from a knee injury, will complete his rehabilitation with United’s medical staff before training with the first team.
The 32 year old is a free agent after refusing to agree a new contract with the Spanish giants at the end of last season and is now trying to regain his fitness before deciding his future.
Valdes was rumoured to be set to join rivals Liverpool but his association with the Red Devils appears to point to an interest by Van Gaal to bring him permanently to United.
As Barca’s all time most used keeper Valdes would provide United a huge amount of experience and would give David De Gea healthy competition.
