Can United recreate the success of 1999?

Season after season, I proudly proclaim that Manchester United are going to win, well everything. That this will be our ’99 all over again!

Of course, as the season progresses, certain trophies look unlikely and get chucked off the list. It tends to become all about the Premier League and the Champions League.

There is always until May to sort it out – and May does tend to be a time of celebration for the Red Devils.

I know it might seem crazy, even a little cheeky to say, but United are STILL contenders for the league. No typo guys!

Let me remind the non-believers that last week David Moyes and his men were 9th and are now comfortably sitting in 5th place.

Sure Arsenal have a five point gap at the top of the table, but with more than half a season to go and their dodgy history with maintaining performance I wouldn’t start congratulating our North London friends just yet.

There have been some big changes at Old Trafford and I was one of those non-believers only a few short games ago, but common sense AND a run of eight unbeaten games has reminded me what United are capable of.

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992 United have won the competition thirteen times. Considerably more than any other team.

The club are of course current holders of the league and are always a strong presence in the Champions League, winning it outright in 2008. Winning obviously hasn’t made anyone complacent, just ask Fergie!

United’s next three league appearances are against Cardiff City, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton respectively.

Although United failed to pick up any points from Spurs or Everton when they played them in the first half of last season, they did manage to turn their fortunes around with a 1-1 draw with Spurs and a 2-0 win against Everton when they met again.

Cardiff City are newly promoted this season so United will be looking to take advantage of their Premier League inexperience and claim all three points.

United are still involved in all four competitions (unlike Arsenal) and look set to advance to the next stage of the Champions League with games against Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk to wrap up.

It’s safe to say the Red Devils don’t have the easiest run up to Christmas but with a very positive recent show of form I think United fans should start believing that what seemed so impossible at the start of the season might actually, come May, be possible!
