Not only was Liverpool’s defence shaky, letting two goals in within the first half but worryingly there didn’t look like there was anyone who could come on and realistically get them the goals they desperately needed.
With Sterling, who is better as a provider than a goal-machine, struggling to make an impact the choice was between Balotelli and Rickie Lambert to come on after the break.
Balotelli got the call up despite making nine league appearances without scoring and unsurprisingly the Italian failed to make a difference.
Liverpool will have to hope that Daniel Sturridge will be able to replicate last seasons form or a dip into the transfer market is their only hope.
