Simon Mignolet has been Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeper since joining in 2013 and has started all 15 league games for the Reds this season, so it was a surprise to see him left out of such an important tie.
The 32 year old stand-in Brad Jones, who has appeared only once in 21 months for the first team, didn’t have a terrible game but you can’t help but wonder if the more experienced Mignolet would have been a more imposing presence between the sticks.
Rodgers explained that Mignolet had played too many games and was being rested but surely his timing suggests a deeper issue.
