With all final day matches played at 3pm, Liverpool walked out at Anfield with the title still just about within reach.
A win against Newcastle and a failure to pick up any points by Manchester City would have seen Liverpool crowned English Champions for the first time since 1990 and would give captain Steven Gerrard the one trophy that has eluded him.
Martin Skrtel opened the scoring, though in the wrong net, with what was his fourth own goal of the season.
Newcastle moved the ball around well but Liverpool fought back with Daniel Agger scoring the Reds 100th league goal this season and then Daniel Sturridge scored another to win the match 2-1.
Despite narrowly missing out to City, the Reds will surely be title contenders next season and notably will once more be playing against the best that Europe has to offer in the Champions League.
