It had to be. We don’t think there was anyone involved in football that wasn’t surprised that this transfer went through. There is no doubting Ozil is a world class player, highlighted by many of his former team mates at Madrid who have come out and stated their shock (and anger in the case of formerly unhappy Ronaldo) at such a quality player being allowed to leave. Dubbed the ‘wizard of assists’ Ozil has a total of 72 assists in the last five seasons at Madrid, which is truly incredible. Although £42 million is an awful lot of money there is far more to this transfer than just the player himself, it’s a signal of intent – a sign that once again top players go to Arsenal, and should mean they get top four once again. Makes a change from signing the likes of Park Chu-Young that’s for sure.
