Newcastle United fans know there is only one reason they’ve not named a new manager yet

mike ashleyWhen Alan Pardew left Newcastle United, the odds on just who would become the next manager at St James Park were all anyone wanted to see.

Now, weeks later, John Carver is still in temporary charge at the club and despite links with various managers, no one has actually been appointed to take the head coach spot at the club.

The Magpies are still in limbo and there is only one reason for that.

Owner Mike Ashley has been more willing to sell stars than buy them since taking over at the club and it seems this window will be no different.

Of course, appointing a new manager would only serve in putting added demands and pressure on him in terms of the club’s current squad – and despite the new man elect being a head coach and only a head coach, no football coach worth their salt would enter into negotiations with a club knowing that two of their most vital players are set to be sold – and that is about it.

The likes of Remi Garde, Steve McClaren et al will all have suggestions of just who they want to bring in to improve the squad – and that is simply not a viable option for Ashley.

Leaving the official appointment of Alan Pardew’s successor until the end of the January transfer window alleviates all of that – you cannot make demands on an owner or a board when there is no one there to buy – and Ashley knows that.

Early front runners like Derby County boss McClaren and Hull City boss Steve Bruce have ruled themselves out of the job, and others have expressed an interest.

It is hard to fathom why the Newcastle United board have let John Carver take charge for such a long time now without offering him the job on a permanent basis – at least until the end of the season – and it seems that is not an option they really fancy.

It will become all too apparent that the plan all along was to get through the winter transfer window, sell if the right offers come in for players and leave Carver in charge under the ruse of allowing him a crack at the job when a new manager is appointed at the start of February – and it will tell you everything you need to know about Ashley.

Newcastle United fans. Is a lack of desire to spend in January the reason behind the lack of effort trying to find a new manager? Let us know your thoughts below, become a guest blogger or tweet us @LaFootyettes.

Of course it is the reason why they haven’t moved to appoint a coach quickly. It would mean that there would be pressure from a new coach to buy players which Ashley simply will not do while the club is safely mid table of the Premiership “where the money is”. That is the extent of the ambition of an owner who should not be allowed to own a football club.
