darren fletcherConsidering how well they did in the summer transfer window, you could be forgiven for thinking that West Ham United would actually struggle to top that this winter.

That being said, it has not stopped manager Sam Allardyce and the board from trying, and the latest name to be linked with the east London club is Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who despite being handed the vice-captain’s armband at the start of the season under Louis van Gaal, has found his opportunities limited and has finally accepted it is time to look for a move away from Old Trafford.

You can understand why Allardyce is keen to land the Scottish player – he is a leader, he is commanding on the pitch and knows when to take the sting out of games. Fletcher is also versatile – and can slot in at the back if need be – another massive plus for the Hammers.

He does however have huge fitness issues, with his well documented struggles with illness, and that would obviously be a concern for any side considering taking a chance on him.

As with most decisions in football, you have to balance the good with the bad – very few clubs can afford flawless players and no one is perfect. Chelsea have injury issues with Diego Costa, even world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo can lose the plot and see red at times. West Ham know this and are no strangers to giving players a chance. Sometimes it pays off. Other times, as with Ravel Morrison, it does not.

When it comes to Fletcher, the midfielder has perhaps the most important attribute going for him – he wants to play, he wants to impress and does everything in his power to make that happen.

West Ham fans. Would you be happy signing Fletcher? Do you think he would add anything to your midfield? Let us know your thoughts below, become a guest blogger or tweet us @LaFootyettes.
