It has been widely reported that Manchester United have signed goalkeeper Victor Valdes on an 18 month deal.
This has also contributed to the reports that both Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, the other goalkeepers at Manchester United, have been told they are free to leave in the January transfer window.
Manchester United’s first choice goalkeeper, David De Gea, has been their saving grace this season. His exceptional form is the reason why he is the only player in the squad to play every minute of the season.
His suspected broken finger injury whilst on international duty proved his importance as fans had a melt down at the prospect of a few weeks without De Gea, but luckily the injury was not serious.
As De Gea has found his form over the last two seasons, both Lindegaard and Amos have become somewhat forgotten. Lindegaard has been at Manchester United for over four years, but as time has progressed, his appearances per season have become fewer and fewer. At the age of 30, he needs to find first team football elsewhere as he will not be able to challenge for David De Gea’s first team spot.
But, what about Victor Valdes?
Valdes has a whole array of honours under his belt – including La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League titles. He has been with Manchester United since late 2014 in order to complete his rehabilitation for a knee injury, working his way back to fitness.
Would Valdes be a good addition to the squad? Absolutely. His experience is paramount, and with two ‘keepers going, United will need a backup. Will he take De Gea’s place? No.
Arguably, this will push De Gea further as there will be considerably more competition for his place. And hopefully will push Ed Woodward and Louis van Gaal to get De Gea to sign a new, long term contract.
