The summer signings. Good lord, the summer signingsIt may be the season to be jolly but West Ham United fans could well find their festive spirit tested after Manchester City upped their chase for Alex Song, who is of course on loan courtesy of Barcelona.

The midfielder has reignited his career under Sam Allardyce and has been a huge part in the success the Hammers have had this season, getting into the top four of the Premier League at one point and now sitting in a lofty position of fifth – something that Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal would love to be able to say.

Manchester City meanwhile are finally putting together some sort of title defence but are worried about potentially not being able to keep Frank Lampard past January when his original loan spell expires and also have to deal with the loss of Yaya Toure who is ACON bound.

Song would provide some pace and indeed power in the middle of the park and could well show some of Manuel Pellegrini’s men a thing or two with his attitude and work rate and according to the Guardian, is a top target of Pellegrini’s come January – and he cannot convince Barcelona to break the loan agreement, the summer – when Toure could of course be sold.

The issue for Allardyce and West Ham would of course be the fact that Barcelona are the ones in control of Song’s future – and could well decide to sell him to City should an offer come in that they deem acceptable – although quite if Song would see this as a good move considering he could well be going back to a life on the bench certainly remains to be seen!

West Ham fans. How much do you think Song has contributed to your success this season? Could you cope with losing him? Let us know your thoughts below, become a guest blogger or tweet us @LaFootyettes.

I’m pretty sure Song can’t be sold in January. We have a loan deal agreement in place until the end of the season. We’ve paid a big fee for that deal and the agreement can’t just be broken because Man City want him.

We have had a few really good midfielders at WHU over the years, but nothing approaching the quality and class of Alex Song.
The board MUST do everything they can to keep him 🙂

If Song is offered the captain’s armband (with Noble as vc) and West Ham qualify for Europe in any way this season he will sign for us. He is looking for signs we are capable of challenging for a top 4 berth by the time we move to the OS. A cup win or Europa League spot will be enough.

He should not be made captain over Nobes in a million years. I don’t care how good he is. You don’t make a player captain just so you can sign him, you make a player captain because he is devoted to the club and has all the necessary leadership qualities. Song will sign without being made captain and I’m sure he is someone who would want to earn that right, not just be given it in a boardroom as a clause in his contract.
