Didier Drogba is showing why Chelsea were right to bring him back to the club – and then some

They say you should never go back, and whilst that may still turn out to be true for Jose Mourinho, it certainly is not the case for Didier Drogba.

The forward is showing just why Chelsea and Mourinho were so keen to have him back at the club and at 36, is only getting better.

Now whilst it is true that he cannot play 90 minutes like he used to in his first spell at the club, what Drogba has lost with his increasing age, he has gained with increased knowledge of the game – and that is showing tenfold.

He ruled the match against Tottenham Hotspur and carried on with his astounding record against north London sides, scoring and setting up a goal – and then came on against Newcastle when Diego Costa was struggling to impose himself on the game and changed it for Chelsea.

It may have been too late for the Blues to get their result but Drogba managed to get a goal and terrorise the Newcastle defence – showing once again that his power, eye for goal and knowledge of the game can make the difference.

It was that Jose Mourinho brought him back to the club for and boy has he been proven right.

Think back to a time in the last decade when Chelsea needed something – a goal, a free kick, a moment of magic.

There are only two names that come to the tip of your lips – and one of them is now doing his level best to help Chelsea’ s direct rivals to the title.

The other is of course Didier Drogba. He was the hero in Munich and that will always be his biggest moment in a Chelsea shirt, but there have been so many more.

Against Everton away when Chelsea were injury ravaged and struggling to get the three points, Drogba was the one who pulled it around.

He ripped Arsenal to shreds time and time again.

When Chelsea needed someone against Barcelona – on multiple occasions – Drogba was the one who stood up and was counted.

He is a hero, a forward who has it all and at the peak of his powers, was arguably the best in the world.

Football fans may have questioned the decision to bring him back to the club. They may have questioned him when he started against Manchester United. They questioned picking him over Loic Remy against Spurs. They even questioned putting him on against Newcastle instead of Remy.

He scored on all of those occasions. The man is unstoppable and it is time football fans stopped focusing on his age and started to focus on his goal tally.
