Silly season is in full swing – Chelsea are closing in on Lionel Messi apparently!

messi barcaYou know the transfer window is about to open when the rumours start to take on another level of ludicrousness and Chelsea are no strangers to being front and centre when that happens.

The Blues are – according to Metro – reportedly now leading the race for Barcelona star Lionel Messi, who has broken just about every record there is to break in world football – bar, ironically, scoring against his apparent suitors.

Messi is without a doubt one of the best players ever to grace the game, but at £200 million, not to mention the fact that his wages would be nothing short of astronomical it makes you wonder if signing the Argentine would actually be a good thing for Jose Mourinho and his men.

The Blues have one of the most settled squads in the league and have a set starting eleven at the minute – and despite no team really wanting to say no to a player like Messi, you have to wonder if Jose Mourinho would be better off doing so.

Bayern Munich and Manchester City were also thought to be keen on Messi but after rebuffing rumours of an impending £200n million deal, City have seemingly cleared the way for Mourinho and his men.

Now more than ever before Messi and his camp are making noises about a potential exit from Cataluña and with his tax evasion case not going away anytime soon, there is a real possibility that he may look to escape all of that.

More to the point, Messi may be one of the best in the world, but he is not getting any younger and you have to wonder if a £200 million bid would convince Barcelona chiefs they should be selling him – we certainly would!

Chelsea fans. Do you want to sign Messi? Would be happy with the Barcelona player acting like a superstar at the club? Let us know your thoughts below, tweet us @LaFooyettes or become a guest blogger for us.

Thinking about the struggle a Chelsea is doing to follow the uefa financial fair play, you can’t be stupid enough to believe at this rumors, specially the ones that make “silly season” a very accurate name.
Buying a player for 200 mi would totally make all the effort to be a sustainable club look stupid, and more than this, could make Chelsea receive penalties by UEFA.
After all that been said, no player in the world deserves a 200 mi tag.
