Chelsea apparently only paid £16 million for Costa – what a deal by Jose!

diego costa Jose Mourinho already thinks he is pretty special, but if these latest rumours are to be believed, the Chelsea boss may need to come up with a bigger and better nickname for himself.

According to Atletico Madrid, who are casting themselves as the poor, abused side who have been taken advantage of by big, bad Chelsea, the Premier League title favourites have only paid HALF of what they originally agreed for Diego Costa who of course has been a revelation since  arriving in west London.

Atleti are of course now stuck with Mario Mandzukic to boot, which cannot have helped sweeten the deal but according to club president Enrique Cerezo, Costa might be a world class forward, but as a person, he has some rather dubious qualities.

He claimed: ‘Costa is one of the best strikers in the world. His departure was rushed through because he had a moment of weakness and he couldn’t say no.

‘If the same were to happen now, he wouldn’t leave. The financial side was not so great for us. We received around 50 per cent of what had been discussed.’

Now Chelsea fans and indeed Costa himself could be forgiven for thinking that the comments are slightly out of order given it is hardly the forward’s fault that a deal was struck and the Alteti board failed to agree a firm amount with Chelsea or include a clause for add on bonuses and title wins!

Either way, no matter if Chelsea paid £16 million or even £32 million for the naturalised Spanish international after you consider the fact that Atleti only received 45% of the eventual price Costa was sold for, they have managed to get one heck of a deal.

Sadly for the Blues, no matter how good the deal is, they will probably never be able to recoup the various amounts spend on misfiring forwards such as Adrian Mutu, Shevchenko and Fernando Torres, who they are still paying for of course! Even Jose isn’t that special!

Chelsea fans. Is this too good to be true? Do you think Mourinho did manage to land Costa for only £16 million? Let us know your thoughts below or tweet us @LaFootyettes.

They probably only recieved half since Atletico didn´t own more than 50% of him.

Seems a pretty clear example of third party ownership, which doesn’t mean Chelsea paid any less than €32m. Just that Atleti received 50% and another party received the other 50%.
