cesc armband didierHe may have only joined the club in the summer but Cesc Fabregas is impressing Chelsea fans and their manager with his assists and goals from the middle of the park – but he has another attribute that has caught the eye of Jose Mourinho – and it could well be the final insult for Arsenal fans.

According to Mourinho, Cesc has shown leadership capabilities that he was previously unaware the Spaniard had and with John Terry just having played his 500th game for the Blues and seeing his career wind down, the Blues will have a vacant spot in their team soon and not just at the heart of the defence.

They will need another captain, and with Petr Cech looking on his way, Didier Drogba older than John Terry and Frank Lampard now at Manchester City, Mourinho could well be forgiven for wondering just who he should appoint as the defender’s successor.

Now Cesc might be new to west London, but he is no stranger to being a leader on the field, having been handed the Arsenal armband in his time at the club – something that Mourinho noted and made sure to make a point of.

The Special One claimed: ‘He [Fabregas] is a better guy than I thought,

‘He’s a fantastic guy, he’s a fantastic professional.

‘Now I understand why at the age of 19 or 20 or 21 he was Arsenal captain.’

Of course this is not news to the majority of people who have followed the career of Fabregas – who has always been a presence on the field and in the dressing room – but it is of course the first time Mourinho has been his manager and not his bitter opposition as with Arsenal and more recently, Barcelona.

It was in La Liga that the relationship between the two took a particular dive that managed to go lower than ‘Pizzagate’ between Cesc and Alex Ferguson – but Mourinho is a manager who will love you unconditionally if you are a subscriber of his, but treat you with even more fervent distain if you are not. Even if you play under him. Just ask Iker Casillas.

Luckily for Cesc and indeed Chelsea, the relationship between manager and midfielder is a very good one indeed, so much so that Mourinho even hinted at a possible captaincy position for Fabregas in a couple of seasons, cryptically stating: ‘But one thing is [the leader’s] brain needs to be connected with the manager, and his brain is connected to mine during matches.’

Praise indeed then, but as John Terry would tell you, he is going nowhere just quite yet – and there could be a couple of other takers there to fight Cesc for the the armband when the time comes!

Chelsea fans. Do you think Cesc could eventually wear the armband? How much money would you pay to see him lead you out at the Emirates Stadium? Let us know your thoughts below or tweet us @LaFootyettes.

If Jose is smart, and he is, it is an obvious decision.

Cesc is a born leader, a top player, and Jose doesn’t look a gift horse in the mouth when given the chance to really wind Arsene up.

Arsene should have signed him. He’s reminded every week why.
