Five star men who lit up the opening weekend of the Premier League

Diego CostaThe Premier League is back and the opening weekend provided some pretty interesting matches. There were goals galore, wins, losses – shock ones at that, draws and red cards.

There were also some pretty stand out players and ones who showed exactly why they cost so much money in the summer – and how they have improved their sides.

There are others who were looking to carry on from where they left off last season, with some succeeding more than others.

With that in mind, here is a look at five players who lit up the opening weekend of Premier League action.

The Gunners keep the edge for fourth placeAaron Ramsey

The Arsenal man could well become as big as Gareth Bale if he carries on like this.

When he is fit and on form, Ramsey is the key to Arsene Wenger’s side and someone who can unlock defences, score goals and drive the team on.

The winner against Crystal Palace just made Arsenal fans wonder what could have been had he stayed fit last season.

Cesc Fabregas v BurnleyCesc Fabregas

Or as he is now known to the Chelsea faithful, Fabreclass.

The midfielder is very close to bringing sexy football to a Jose Mourinho side – and has taken their play up a notch.

Fans may have been sad to see Frank Lampard leave, but already Cesc is showing why Mourinho was right to chase him – and why Arsene Wenger has messed up again.

Diego CostaDiego Costa

Finally Chelsea have a forward who can score. Costa has done what all their strikers last season could not – and it did not even take him 45 minutes.

He scored on a wet night, up north against a promoted side. Chelsea’s issue last season was failing to beat the dregs of the league.

With Costa in their side, it does not look like being a problem this season.

Ashley WilliamsAshley Williams

Swansea pulled off a shock win at Old Trafford and showed that they are not as nailed on favourites for the drop as we may have thought.

Williams was, without a doubt, the star man and kept the back four marshalled and the front men for United out.

Performances like that could see the Swans stay up. Well that or get Williams a move away in January.

Raheem SterlingRaheem Sterling

The new half of the reconstituted SAS and someone who is a top class player.

Links with Real Madrid were swirling in the summer and on the back of his pre-season performances and the one against Southampton, it is not hard to see why.

Sterling will be key for Liverpool this season if they want to go far and Rodgers will need him at the top of his game.

Costa was pure class and has hit the ground running, exactly what Chelsea needed. Likewise with Aaron Ramsey, another player who has looked excellent – if Arsenal were to lose him I think they’d be in a mess!

Raheem Sterling is someone i’ve kept an eye on for a while. He just keeps looking better, I think if his career is managed properly he will go on to be one of the best. We’ve seen a lot of promising young players burn out too early by being over-hyped! Liverpool should do well with him alongside Sturridge and now of course, Balotelli.
