No Cole? Quite frankly, we care more about the #VEMIBRA campaign

wc 2014So the International preliminary squads have been announced and as per usual, there is more of a focus on players who have failed to make the grade than those who did.

Ashley Cole is of course the most notable absentee for England and took to twitter (or paid someone slightly more eloquent who would not harp on about crashing his car upon hearing the news) to graciously retire from International football and wish the England squad all the best in Brazil.

Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy also missed out and was not shy in expressing just how annoyed he felt about that – but nothing will surpass the twitter outburst Samir Nasri’s partner managed to come out with.

The F bomb was dropped more frequently than Didier Drogba describing exactly what he thought after the final whistle had blown after the Scandal of Stamford Bridge back in 2009. Nasri is not the only player omitted from Didier Deschampes’ squad – who according to Nasri’s ‘model’ girlfriend can ‘go and f**k himself’ with Gael Clichy also a notable absentee.

That is not the half of it however with most squads having at least one player left behind who quite frankly should have been on that plane.

Spain and Vicente del Bosque stuck to their age old habit of taking their favourite names with the likes of Juan Mata also making the squad despite Isco missing out. Diego Lopez – the man who managed to oust number one Iker Casillas last term in the Real Madrid squad and also the league team this term was not even in the 30 man squad and Chelsea’s most useless forward –a hard accolade to achieve indeed this term – Fernando Torres boards the plane as well.

Argentina’s squad makes for puzzling reading with one of the best goalkeepers this season and certainly their best stopper Willy Caballero missing out – and Franco di Santo will travel to Brazil ahead of Carlos Tevez.

Clearly there must be something in the water in South America with Brazil coach Scolari evidently having missed the majority of Atletico Madrid’s fine season with neither Miranda or  Fillipe Luiz both failing to make the cut. Phillipe Coutinho has also missed out along with Lucas Moura, Kaka (quite rightly) and Robinho.

Mario Balotelli will board the plane for Italy despite rumours his behaviour may see him punished by omission and of course both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will be there with the latter stating that he does not feel worthy of the ‘greatest ever’ tag unless he manages to add a World Cup to his trophy collection.

Whilst there is debate raging in various countries over the players who have failed to make the team picked by their manager there is also an innovative campaign to get Ibrahimovic to Brazil this summer.

Sweden will not be taking part in the tournament after losing to Ronaldo FC in the playoffs, and of course Ibra claimed a tournament without him is not worth watching – and it seems the public agree with a social media campaign featuring the likes of Brazil stars Ronaldo, Denilson and Dani Alves  amongst others asking the player ‘#VEMIBRA.’

We certainly hope Ibra makes it on that plane! Who do you think deserves to go to Brazil? What are your thoughts on Cole? Let us know your thoughts below or tweet us @LaFootyettes.
