Early on Fernando Torres had a great chance to put Chelsea in front but ultimately was unable to find the finish.
Cardiff, despite having been relegated, were the first to draw blood as forward Craig Bellamy put the Welsh club ahead after 15 minutes in front of their home supporters.
Cardiff held onto their one goal lead throughout the first half and much of the second until Andre Schurrle levelled the score in the 72nd minute.
Within two minutes of Schurrle’s goal, Torres finally got one of his own, his fifth of the season.
Neither team played exceptionally well though Chelsea did have far more shots on target than Cardiff.
Manager Jose Mourinho said early on in the season that his side were not yet ready to win the title and so would be buying and selling players during the summer transfer window ready to challenge for silverware next season.
With that in mind perhaps some unsuspecting Blues may have played their last match for the club.
