For Interim manager Ryan Giggs’ second match in charge he started Javier Hernandez up front with Juan Mata behind him.
The first half was uneventful until Sebastian Larsson put the Black Cats in front after 30 minutes with very little opposition coming from the back four.
With so few chances Giggs brought on newly fit Robin van Persie to partner up with Hernandez in an effort to cancel out the Sunderland goal.
United pressed but with time running out they appeared more and more lethargic and unlikely to break Sunderland down.
Larsson’s goal gives Sunderland an important victory and increases their survival hopes. United though look to be over their intial change of manager high and underwhelmed as they have done all season.
